Steps to Miles Calculator

Convert a step count into miles and kilometres using a stride length derived from your height.

How this calculator arrives at its answer

Step counters report steps, not distance, and the conversion depends entirely on your stride. Taller people cover more ground per step, and running strides are far longer than walking ones.

The common ten thousand step target works out to roughly four to five miles for most adults, which the calculator will show precisely for your height.

The default scenario, worked through

As an example, with a body weight of 70, the calculator returns a distance of 4.38. Underneath, In kilometres comes out at 7.05 km and Stride length at 70.5 cm. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.

How to fill it in

  1. Enter your step count and your height.
  2. Choose walking or running.
  3. Add your weight for an approximate calorie figure.

How the number is calculated

stride ≈ height × 0.415 (walking) or × 0.65 (running) miles = steps × stride ÷ 1609.34

FAQ

How many steps are in a mile?
Between about 1,900 and 2,400 walking steps for most adults, depending on height and pace.
Is 10,000 steps a real target?
It originated as a marketing figure in Japan, though research does support meaningful health benefits well before that number.
Why is my watch different?
Most devices calibrate stride from GPS over time, which is more accurate than a height-based estimate.
