GFR Calculator

Estimate glomerular filtration rate from serum creatinine using the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation, with the CKD stage.

How the gfr calculator works

Estimated GFR is the standard measure of kidney function. This calculator uses the CKD-EPI 2021 equation, which removed the race coefficient that earlier versions applied, and reports the result in mL/min per 1.73m² of body surface area.

A single low reading does not establish chronic kidney disease. The definition requires reduced GFR or other markers of kidney damage persisting for at least three months.

How to fill it in

  1. Enter serum creatinine and choose the units.
  2. Enter age and sex.
  3. Read the eGFR and the CKD stage it corresponds to.

The formula

eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 if female κ = 0.7 female / 0.9 male · α = −0.241 female / −0.302 male

The default scenario, worked through

On the values this calculator opens with, the estimated GFR is 79. Underneath, CKD stage comes out at G2 — mildly decreased and Creatinine used at 1.1 mg/dL. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.

Common questions

What is a normal eGFR?
Above 90 is typical for healthy adults. Values decline gradually with age even without disease.
Why was race removed from the equation?
The 2021 revision dropped the race coefficient after evidence that it systematically overestimated kidney function in Black patients and delayed care.
Is eGFR the same as creatinine clearance?
No. Creatinine clearance from Cockcroft-Gault is used for drug dosing; eGFR is used for staging kidney disease. This tool is informational, not a diagnosis.
