Smoking Cost Calculator

Enter packs per day and the local pack price to see what smoking costs per week, month, year and decade — the number that motivates quitting.

What this calculator shows

Ask a smoker what the habit costs and the answer is usually the pack price — because that’s the number paid at a time. Multiply it out and the picture changes: enter packs per day and your local price, and this calculator returns the weekly, monthly, yearly and ten-year figures. For many people the yearly number is the single most effective quit motivator there is.

How to use it

  1. Enter packs per day — halves and quarters work (0.5 for ten a day).
  2. Enter your local pack price.
  3. Read the totals — and what a quit date would save.

The arithmetic

daily = packs × price · yearly = daily × 365

A worked example

A pack a day at $8 is $243 a month, $2,920 a year, and $29,200 over a decade — before the price rises that tobacco reliably sees. Half a pack still runs $1,460 a year. And the money is the smaller half of the ledger: the health cost compounds faster than any price — quitting pays on both accounts, and support for it is free in most countries.

Common questions

What could the yearly amount become if invested?
$2,920 a year at 7% grows past $40,000 in ten years — run it through the compound-interest calculator on this site; the doubling math is startling.
Does vaping cost less?
Usually per-week, yes — but “less than smoking” is a low bar, and the honest comparison for health and money alike is zero. Quit support beats substitution math.
Where do I get help quitting?
Most countries run free quitlines and programs through their health service — a doctor or pharmacist can point to local support, and combining support with medication roughly doubles success rates.
