Mean Arterial Pressure Calculator

Work out MAP from systolic and diastolic pressure, plus pulse pressure and the blood pressure category.

The method behind this calculator

Mean arterial pressure is the average pressure driving blood into the tissues over a full cardiac cycle. Because the heart spends roughly twice as long in diastole as in systole, the formula weights diastolic pressure twice as heavily.

MAP is a better indicator of organ perfusion than systolic pressure alone, which is why it appears in critical care targets. A value around 60 is generally taken as the lower bound for adequate perfusion.

Getting your answer

  1. Enter your systolic reading (the higher number).
  2. Enter your diastolic reading (the lower number).
  3. Optionally add heart rate for the rate pressure product.

The maths behind it

MAP = diastolic + (systolic โˆ’ diastolic) รท 3 pulse pressure = systolic โˆ’ diastolic

A worked example

Take the starting scenario, a heart rate of 70. That gives a mean arterial pressure of 93.3. Underneath, Pulse pressure comes out at 40 mmHg and Blood pressure category at Stage 1 hypertension range. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.

Questions people ask about this

What is a normal MAP?
Roughly 70 to 100 mmHg in healthy adults. Below 60 raises concern about organ perfusion.
Why is diastolic weighted more?
Because the heart spends about two thirds of each cycle in diastole, so that pressure contributes more to the time-weighted average.
Is a wide pulse pressure a problem?
A pulse pressure above roughly 60 mmHg can indicate arterial stiffening. A single reading is not a diagnosis โ€” discuss any concern with a clinician.
