Estimate a healthy target weight for your height and sex, using the Devine, Robinson and Miller formulas plus a healthy BMI range.
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates ideal body weight from your height and sex using several established formulas, and also shows the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI.
No single number is right for everyone — build, muscle and frame all matter — so use the range as a guide rather than a strict target.
Step by step
- Choose your sex.
- Enter your height in cm or inches.
- Compare the formula estimates and the healthy BMI range.
The formula
Devine (men) = 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft)
women start at 45.5 kg; healthy BMI range = 18.5–24.9 × height²
Worked example
Worked through, a height of 175 produces a ideal weight (Devine) of 70.5 kg. Underneath, Robinson comes out at 68.9 kg and Miller at 68.7 kg. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.
Frequently asked questions
Which ideal weight formula is best?
They’re all approximations from the same era. The healthy BMI range is often more useful because it gives a band rather than one figure.
Does ideal weight account for muscle?
No — these formulas use only height and sex. Athletic or muscular people may sit above the estimate while still being healthy.
Should I aim for exactly this weight?
