Final Grade Calculator

Enter your current grade, your target, and the final exam’s weight to see exactly what score you need on the final.

The question this answers

“What do I need on my final?” has an exact answer, and it depends on three numbers: where you stand now, where you want to finish, and how much of the course the final is worth. The calculator rearranges the weighted-average formula so the needed score comes out directly — along with an honest verdict when the target is out of reach or already secured.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current grade in the course.
  2. Enter the final grade you want.
  3. Enter the final exam’s weight as a percentage of the course.

The formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

A worked example

Sitting at 78% with a final worth 40% of the course, aiming for 80% overall: the other 60% of your grade contributes 78 × 0.6 = 46.8 points, so the final must supply 80 − 46.8 = 33.2 points from its 40 — that is 83% on the exam. The verdict reads “comfortably doable”. Aim for 90% overall instead and the needed score jumps to 108% — the calculator says plainly that the target is not reachable by the final alone.

Common questions

What if I need more than 100%?
The target cannot be reached through the final alone — look for other levers: remaining assignments, resubmissions, or an adjusted target. The calculator flags this instead of pretending.
Does this work for points instead of percentages?
Yes — convert points to percentages first (earned ÷ possible × 100), or just enter everything as percentages of their own categories.
What if my course has several remaining exams?
Combine their weights and treat them as one block — the result is the average you need across them.
