Solve for density, mass or volume using the relationship density = mass ÷ volume.
How density is worked out
Density relates how much mass fits in a given volume. Choose what you want to solve for, enter the other two values, and this calculator returns the answer.
It works with any consistent units — the default is kilograms and cubic metres.
Worked example
The calculator opens with a mass of 10, volume of 2, density of 1,000. On those figures the result is 5. Alongside it, Formula comes out at m ÷ v. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.
Getting your answer
- Pick whether to solve for density, mass or volume.
- Enter the two known values.
- Read the result.
The maths behind it
density = mass ÷ volume
mass = density × volume · volume = mass ÷ density
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate density?
Divide the mass by the volume. 10 kg in 2 m³ gives a density of 5 kg/m³.
What units should I use?
Any consistent set works. Keep mass and volume in matching systems — kg and m³, or g and cm³.
Why does density matter?
It tells you whether something floats or sinks, and helps convert between weight and volume for materials and liquids.
