What this calculator does

Enter two birth dates and it returns the gap between them three ways: years-months-days with proper calendar borrowing, the total number of days, and which person is older. It is the quick settle-the-argument tool for couples, siblings and celebrity trivia alike — and unlike mental arithmetic, it gets the month-length borrowing right every time.

A worked example

Between 10 April 1994 and 15 May 2000 the gap is 6 years, 1 month and 5 days — 2,227 days in total, with the first person older. The gap never changes as both people age, which sounds obvious until birthday-month arithmetic makes it feel otherwise: for part of every year the whole-year difference reads one higher, and this calculator’s exact figure is the referee.

Common questions

Why does the gap sometimes “feel” different around birthdays?
Between the two birthdays each year, one person has aged a year and the other hasn’t, so the whole-year gap reads one higher. The exact years-months-days figure is constant.
Does it matter which date goes first?
No — the calculator orders them itself and tells you which person is older.
Can I use it for events instead of people?
