Playback Speed Calculator

Enter a video, audiobook or podcast length and a playback speed to see the real listening time — and exactly how much you save.

What faster playback really saves

Everyone speeds up podcasts; almost nobody knows what it actually saves across a long audiobook or a lecture series. Enter the content length and pick a speed, and this calculator returns the real elapsed time and the time saved — the honest arithmetic behind the “I listen at 2×” brag.

How to use it

  1. Enter the content length in hours and minutes.
  2. Pick the playback speed.
  3. Read the real listening time and the saving.

The formula

real time = duration ÷ speed · saved = duration − real time

A worked example

An 8 h 30 m audiobook at 1.5× takes 5 h 40 m — saving 2 h 50 m, a whole evening. At 2× it drops to 4 h 15 m. The counter-intuitive part: the jump from 1× to 1.25× saves more minutes than the jump from 1.75× to 2× on the same book — each step up buys less than the one before, because the divisor grows.

Common questions

Does comprehension survive 2×?
Research on speech comprehension finds most people hold up well to about 1.5×–2× for familiar material, with drop-off beyond — and it varies with content density. Speed up recaps; slow down the dense chapters.
Why do speeds above 2× feel disproportionately hard?
Pitch-corrected audio compresses pauses first; past ~2× the pauses are gone and the words themselves compress, which is where processing load spikes.
Does 1.5× use less battery or data?
Streaming the same file uses the same data — just over less time. Battery saving is roughly proportional to the shorter listening session.
