What this calculator estimates
Sod is sold by the roll and delivered by the pallet, and the ordering mistake is always the same: measuring the lawn exactly and forgetting the cuts. Enter length and width, confirm the roll coverage your supplier uses (10 sq ft is the common standard), and add a waste percentage for edges and curves — the calculator returns rolls, total coverage, and the approximate pallet count.
How to use it
- Measure the lawn area — for L-shapes, split into rectangles and add the areas.
- Confirm your supplier’s roll size (it varies — check before ordering).
- Keep 5% waste for simple rectangles, 10% for curved beds and obstacles.
The formula
rolls = area × (1 + waste) ÷ roll coverage, rounded up
A worked example
A 50 × 30 ft lawn is 1,500 sq ft; with 5% waste that is 1,575 sq ft — 158 rolls at 10 sq ft each, about 3.5 pallets. Order for same-day laying: sod is perishable and a pallet left stacked in summer heat starts cooking itself within a day.
Common questions
How fast must sod be laid?
Same day in warm weather — within 24 hours at most. Schedule delivery for the morning you install, with the ground prepared beforehand.
How much does a pallet weigh?
Roughly 1,500–3,000 lb depending on soil moisture — plan where the delivery truck can set it down, because moving a pallet by hand is a full day’s regret.
