How the cycle works

The Chinese zodiac runs a 12-year animal cycle — Rat through Pig — interlocked with a 10-year cycle of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, two years each), producing the full 60-year pattern. Enter a birth year and this calculator returns the animal, the element, and the neighbouring years that share the animal.

The arithmetic

animal = (year − 4) mod 12 · element = (year − 4) mod 10, two years per element

A worked example

1995 comes out as the Wood Pig — sharing its animal with 1983 and 2007, and its Wood element with 1994. The critical footnote: the zodiac year begins at the lunar new year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. Someone born on 5 February 1995 was actually still in the Dog year — which is why this calculator tells early-year birthdays to check the exact lunar date rather than pretending the boundary is 1 January.

Whichever side of that year’s lunar new year you fall on — look up the exact date for your birth year. Before it, you belong to the previous animal.
What are the five elements?
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — each colouring two consecutive years, so the same animal returns every 12 years but the same animal-element pairing only every 60.
Is this astrology or tradition?
A calendar tradition more than a claim about personality — the animal assignment itself is straightforward arithmetic on the lunisolar calendar, and that part is simply factual.
