BAC Calculator

Estimate blood alcohol concentration from drinks, body weight, sex and time elapsed using the Widmark formula.

How bac is worked out

The Widmark formula estimates BAC from the alcohol consumed relative to body water, then subtracts roughly 0.015 per hour for metabolism. It is the basis of most online BAC estimates.

It is an estimate only, and a rough one. Food, medication, drinking speed, individual metabolism and body composition all shift the real figure โ€” sometimes substantially. It should never be used to decide whether to drive.

Getting your answer

  1. Enter your body weight and sex.
  2. Enter the number of standard drinks.
  3. Enter the hours since your first drink.

The maths behind it

BAC โ‰ˆ (grams of alcohol รท (body weight in g ร— r)) ร— 100 โˆ’ 0.015 ร— hours r = 0.68 male, 0.55 female ยท standard drink = 14 g alcohol

A worked example

As an example, with a hours since first drink of 2, the calculator returns a estimated BAC of 0.05%. Underneath, Peak BAC before metabolism comes out at 0.08% and Alcohol metabolised at 0.03%. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.

Common questions

What is a standard drink?
About 14 grams of pure alcohol โ€” roughly a 12 oz beer at 5%, 5 oz of wine at 12%, or 1.5 oz of spirits at 40%.
How long does alcohol take to leave the system?
Roughly one standard drink per hour, though this varies. The calculator shows an estimated time back to zero.
Can I use this to decide whether to drive?
No. This is a rough estimate that can be wrong in either direction. If you have been drinking, do not drive.
