Estimate what a US savings bond is worth at redemption, including the early-redemption penalty and tax.
The method behind this calculator
Series I bonds pay a composite rate that combines a fixed rate with an inflation adjustment, so they track the cost of living. Series EE bonds pay a low fixed rate but are guaranteed to double in value if held twenty years.
Redeeming before five years costs you the last three months of interest, which this calculator applies automatically. Savings bond interest is exempt from state and local tax.
Try it with these numbers
Take the starting scenario, a federal tax rate at redemption of 22%. That gives a bond value of $15,235.02. Underneath, Interest earned comes out at $5,235.02 and Early-redemption penalty at None after 5 years. Change any field and every figure updates as you type.
How to use it
